Petroc Hosts Battle of the Bands

The final regional heat of the Devon Music Education Hubs‘ Secondary Schools Battle of the Bands took place at Petroc’s ‘Nexus’ Music space. This thrilling event featured impressive performances from talented young musicians representing Petroc, Holsworthy Community College, The Ilfracombe Academy, Bideford College, Park Community School, and Great Torrington School.

The atmosphere was electric as each band showcased their musical prowess, vying for the top spot in this prestigious competition. Petroc students were at the heart of the event, facilitating sound checks and engineering the live sound throughout the evening. This hands-on experience was invaluable for our vocational learners, providing them with real-world skills and a taste of the professional music industry.

Great Torrington School’s band ‘Absent Minds’ emerged victorious, with Ilfracombe Academy’s ‘Half-life’ as the runner-up. Both bands will advance to the final at Bomba in Exeter this Thursday. Special mentions went to Park Community School and Petroc, who have been offered a slot at The MIX Festival on 5 July at Bridwell Park.

John Bangham, lecturer for the Level 3 Music Performance and Production programme, commented, “Hosting the Battle of the Bands is a brilliant experience for all involved. It is always amazing when everything comes together to create a live event, it gives our students a real sense of what it’s like to work in the music industry, and for the bands to show what they can do on a big stage.”

The event not only highlighted the incredible talent of secondary school students across the region but also underscored Petroc’s commitment to providing practical, career-focused opportunities for its students.
