Carpentry learners are making waves with an exciting, hands-on boat-building project
Level 1 and Level 2 Site Carpentry students are currently constructing plywood and fibreglass boats as part of their Skills Boost and work experience programme.
Working with materials supplied by Jewson, one of the UK’s leading timber suppliers, students are benefiting from access to high-quality resources as well as valuable insight into current industry standards. The partnership ensures that learners are not only building their technical abilities, but also gaining an understanding of professional practices and expectations within the construction sector.
Throughout the project, students are applying a wide range of carpentry skills, from measuring and cutting to assembling and finishing, all while working collaboratively to bring their boats to life. The addition of fibreglass elements introduces learners to new materials and techniques, further enhancing their skillset.
The project will conclude in an exciting sea trial at Westward Ho! Sea Pool, where students will have the opportunity to test their finished boats on the water. This final stage provides a rewarding and memorable conclusion to their hard work, as well as a chance to reflect on the success of their builds.
Lecturers have praised the project for its ability to engage learners and build confidence, while strengthening links between education and industry. By working on a live, practical brief in partnership with a recognised supplier, students are gaining meaningful experience that will support their progression into careers within the construction industry.
Stay tuned for more updates on the project as it progresses.
