English Literature & Classical Civilisation Students Step Into History on Bath Trip

Students from our A Level English Literature and Classical Civilisation courses enjoyed an unforgettable day in Bath last week, immersing themselves in the worlds of Jane Austen, Mary Shelley and the ancient Romans.

A joint group of 26 students took part in the visit, exploring key cultural and historical landmarks that brought their subjects to life far beyond the classroom.

Austen, Shelley and a Brush With Frankenstein…

The English Literature group began their day at the Jane Austen Centre, discovering more about the author’s life, inspirations and legacy. Students even had the chance to dress up in Regency attire, stepping directly into the era that shaped Austen’s writing.

Just a short walk away, the group continued their literary journey at the House of Frankenstein, the immersive museum dedicated to Mary Shelley. Alongside learning about the trailblazing author – often credited as an early founder of science fiction – students also braved the museum’s famously spooky basement, designed to mimic Frankenstein’s lair. Rumour has it a few screams were heard…

Exploring the Roman Baths

After a lunch break to explore the city and enjoy the festive atmosphere of the Bath Christmas Market, the Classical Civilisation students headed to the iconic Roman Baths.

Led by Dr Mike Beer, students received a guided tour through one of Britain’s most important ancient sites, learning about Roman engineering, culture and daily life. They even sampled fresh water from a historic-style fountain – a nod to the ancient practice of drinking the Baths’ “healing” waters.

A Day That Brought Learning to Life

The trip offered students a chance to deepen their understanding of literature and classical history through real-world experiences. From costume try-ons and atmospheric exhibits to standing beside Bath Abbey for group photos, the day was filled with memorable moments.

Feedback from both staff and students has been overwhelmingly positive, with many describing the visit as “inspiring”, “fun” and “a brilliant chance to see our subjects in action”.
