Petroc Celebrates Success of Supported Internship Programme with Awards Evening

Petroc proudly hosted its first Supported Internship Celebration and Awards Evening recently, marking a significant milestone for students transitioning from college into the world of work.

The event brought together interns, their families, and local employers to celebrate the incredible progress and achievements of this year’s interns, as well as to acknowledge the vital support provided by partner businesses across North Devon.

Organised as a heartfelt send-off for students completing the Supported Internship course, Petroc’s final step before entering paid employment, the event showcased stories of growth, perseverance, and success. Each intern received recognition for their dedication, with staff highlighting their individual journeys and next steps.

Student Success Stories

  • Chloe Middleton completed placements at The Imperial Hotel and Petroc Food Hall, where she developed catering and communication skills. Known for her punctuality and ability to follow instructions, Chloe is now actively seeking employment in the catering industry.
  • Harlum Lewis experienced roles at The Ultimate Adventure Centre and later Calvert Devon, where he thrived as an activity assistant. Harlum grew in confidence, especially in delivering safety briefings, and is looking to continue his career in the outdoor adventure sector. Petroc extended special thanks to Calvert Devon for offering a bespoke placement that helped Harlum flourish.
  • Marc Dale began his internship at the Co-op in Bideford, quickly impressing staff and securing paid employment. He continued to build on his skills at Poundstretcher, all while studying for his GCSE Maths. Marc has become more independent and proactive throughout the programme.
  • Kirsten Martin excelled during her placement at Boots, exploring multiple departments and securing employment halfway through the programme. She now enjoys working on the tills and has demonstrated excellent multitasking abilities.
  • Lauren Hedden worked with the Forces Support Charity Shop, where she boosted her confidence and teamwork skills. She is set to continue her development through Project Search at North Devon District Hospital.
  • Ben Curtis gained valuable kitchen experience at Harry’s Café, learning food prep and service skills. His confidence grew through independent tasks, and he has now secured paid work as a kitchen porter at Saunton Sands Beachside Grill.
  • Ellie Saunders completed placements at North Devon Hospice in Barnstaple and South Molton before gaining additional experience at Avo Craft Café. Ellie adapted well in all environments and is now volunteering while exploring paid roles. Petroc offered heartfelt thanks to North Devon Hospice for their exceptional mentorship and support.

Recognising Employer Contributions

The event also acknowledged the essential role of local businesses in shaping student success:

  • Stanners Gym was recognised for boosting one intern’s confidence and helping them identify a potential career in fitness.
  • Vista Wellbeing CIC was praised for its inclusive approach, offering meaningful experiences and a clear progression route for one of the interns.

“This was our first celebration of the Supported Internship Programme”, said Hayley Willison, Supported Internship Programme Manager. “I wanted to give students and families a special way to mark the end of their time at Petroc. It’s more than just certificates, it’s about recognising their growth, saying thank you to the employers, and building relationships for future placements across North Devon.

With overwhelmingly positive feedback from businesses; many already keen to work with Petroc again, the Supported Internship Programme is growing and Petroc hopes the event inspires more employers to come on board and open new opportunities for students across the region in years to come.
