Petroc Student Represents Team GB at the World Ocean Racing Championships!

Petroc is proud to celebrate student Jim Turner, who was recently selected to represent Great Britain at the 2025 ICF World Ocean Racing Championships in Durban, South Africa!

Jim earned his place on the team through a series of tough selection races, including the British Championships and the French National Championships, a fantastic achievement that reflects his dedication, skill, and passion for ocean racing.

The event saw top athletes from across the globe take on a 34km course from Durban Harbour up the coastline to Westbrook Beach. Racing on an ocean surf ski – a craft similar to a kayak, using a double-bladed paddle and foot-controlled rudder. Competitors battled challenging conditions, with minimal wind and a difficult shore break at the finish.

In Durban, Jim completed the race in an impressive 2 hours, 28 minutes, and 21 seconds, finishing 33rd in the Under-23 men’s category – a superb result at his first World Championships in this age group.

Everyone at Petroc wishes Jim the very best of luck as he continues his journey in this demanding and exciting sport. We’re incredibly proud of all he’s achieved so far, and we’ll be cheering him on as he takes on future challenges on the world stage!
