Jordan is currently studying the Public Services BTEC Diploma at our North Devon Campus.
Why did you choose to come to Petroc?
I chose to come to Petroc after attending one of the information evenings. Petroc has a good reputation and I only ever heard good things from other family members that also attended.
…And what made you pick this particular study programme/course?
I originally wanted to go into the Police force, and the specialist learning offered on Uniformed Public Services made it the perfect route of progression.
Which elements of your study programme/course do you particularly enjoy?
I love the physical side of the course. We also do a lot of really good trips; from spending time with the Royal Marines to going on survival & bushcraft expeditions, they are experiences that no other course in the area can offer.
What have been the highlights so far (trips, visits, projects etc.)?
It's got to be when I went to the Commando Training Centre at Lympstone and lived as a Royal Marine for a week. It was that trip that made me realise that the Royal Marines is the career I need to go into.
What do you most enjoy about studying at Petroc?
Both the lecturers and the freedom you're given to learn; it makes studying at Petroc easy! The lecturing staff are always very keen to help and make sure that the course isn't too overwhelming – they don't expect too much in a short space of time.
What’s the long-term plan after leaving college (further study, career etc.)? As mentioned before, I hope to go into the Royal Marines once completing the course, although I'm planning to take a year out and work as a lifeguard while I work out the best career path for me. Ideally I want to join as a medic and I aim to complete a ten year service.
Any advice for someone thinking of choosing the same course as you?
Be ready to change and it will likely give you a completely new outlook on life. Before I started the course I wasn't bothered about fitness at all, and now I make sure I'm in the gym five days a week! The freedom of college allows you to see who you really are as a person.
