Riley Kesterton

Biography

What made you pick this particular course?
I’ve always been interested in studying animals, and have always found happiness in watching and interacting with animals both big and small. After attending my interview for the course, I immediately knew that this course was the perfect one for me due to the wide array of topics covered and diverse species located within the college. I had always wanted to work with animals from as young as I can remember, and I remember that whenever I spoke to reputable businesses such as Pets at Home as to how to enter the industry they always recommended Petroc College specifically.

What do you most enjoy about studying at Petroc?
I really enjoy all of my lessons due to the large amount of interesting topics which can help us in the real world, including but not limited to training of animals, handling and restraint, and other fun topics. I also enjoy the friendly atmosphere in college as I feel much more recognised by the super friendly staff and appreciated for any extra efforts I put in.

Have you got involved in any enrichment activities?
I have not, but I really appreciate the large variety of enrichment activities available to me should I wish to use them.

Did you undertake any work experience throughout your studies?
I undertake work experience at LA Stables in Bideford, which was a very new experience for me as I have not spent much time around horses. As someone who often worries about doing things incorrectly at work, I went in quite anxious but soon came to realise that all of my new colleagues were incredibly kind.
I have really enjoyed my time at the stables and feel much more confident working with larger animals, and it even helped me gain a new appreciation for a species I hadn’t previously thought a whole lot about. Overall, I feel that work experience has helped my develop as a person in more ways that one, and has benefitted me well and will help me in my future endeavours post-college.

What do you plan to do when you leave Petroc?
After College I plan to either begin work at a zoo as that has always been my dream, or alternatively I might go to university to study in conservation which as been a secondary dream of mine.

Any advice for someone thinking of choosing the same course as you?
Get in touch with Petroc, all of the staff are very helpful, supportive and approachable and will be eager to discuss with you any concerns or questions you might have about going into the course. Other than that, my opinion would be go for it! If your passionate about animals like me, you won’t regret taking up this course – and even if you do, for the first few months it’s very easy and simple for you to change courses meaning that you really have nothing to lose.
