Petroc College Brings 14-16 Provision Back to Support Local Learners

Petroc has announced the return of its Key Stage 4 provision, offering 14-16-year-olds in Devon a fresh pathway to education.

This exciting new programme provides young people with the opportunity to transition from school to college in a supportive, inclusive, and adaptable environment. Designed to meet the needs of students who may struggle with traditional schooling, the initiative aims to help prevent learners from becoming NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) by offering tailored educational options.

Listening to feedback from local feeder schools and parents, Petroc has developed a comprehensive approach that responds to the growing number of EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan) and SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) learners in Devon. The programme includes a GCSE pathway, flexible vocational qualifications, and a part-time transition option, ensuring that all students receive the right support to succeed.

Commenting on the initiative, Jo Byrne, Assistant Principal, said:

“We believe every young person deserves access to education that works for them. By collaborating closely with feeder schools and Devon County Council, this programme offers learners a chance to thrive in a more flexible and hands-on learning environment. We’re proud to provide a stepping stone for young people to explore their potential and prepare for their futures.”

Highlights of the Key Stage 4 provision include:

Accelerate Programme – full-time courses tailored for Year 10 and 11 students with a focus on Functional Skills, vocational qualifications, and personal development.

GCSE Pathway – alternative GCSE options combined with vocational studies and enrichment activities.

Flexible Transition Programme -a  part-time option offering hands-on experience in fields like construction, early years, and hair & beauty.

Online Schooling – courses in English, Maths, and Science for students seeking flexibility.

This provision reaffirms Petroc’s role in the community, offering students a chance to explore a different type of learning that bridges the gap between school and college, supporting their ambitions while addressing local educational challenges.
