Interview & Initial Assessment
In order to ensure you are on the right course that suits your needs, all students are invited in for an Initial Assessment prior to the start of their course, which comprises of a review of your grades, and an assessment of your proficiency in Maths and English and of your practical learning skills.
A-level courses at Petroc
To take three A-levels we require you to have a minimum of GCSE grade 4 in both maths and English Language alongside a minimum of three other GCSEs at grade 4 or above. We suggest that those wishing to progress on to careers in Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine, hould have the majority of their GCSE grades at grade 7. Those wishing to progress on to other careers through graduating from high level institutions such as Russell Group universities (including Oxford and Cambridge) should also have the majority of GCSE grades at Grade 7.

Entry Level Study Programmes at Petroc
For all learners joining Entry Level Study Programmes, there are no formal English and Maths entry requirements. Learners on these programmes will study English and Maths at an appropriate level to suit their ability.
Level 1 Study Programmes at Petroc
All entrants must hold 4 GCSEs at grade 2 or equivalent or above, preferably including Maths and English Language. At the end of the one-year programme all learners are expected to have achieved GCSE Maths and GCSE English Language at grade 4, or show that they have been working towards improving their English and Maths by achieving an improvement to their previous grade.
Level 2 Study Programmes at Petroc
All entrants must hold 4 GCSEs at grade 3 or equivalent or above, to preferably include GCSE Maths at grade 3 or above and GCSE English Language at grade 3 or above. Entrants holding a grade 2 or a 3 in GCSE Maths will study towards GCSE Maths to gain grade 4 or above. Those with a grade 1 or below will study Level 1 Functional Skills Maths and retake GCSE Maths in the following year.
Entrants holding a grade 2 or a 3 in GCSE English Language will study towards GCSE English Language to gain grade 4 or above. Those with a grade 1 or below will study the Level 1 Functional Skills English and retake GCSE in the following year. At the end of the study programme all learners are expected to have completed and achieved all the components of their Level 2 Study Programme and achieved a graded improvement in their Maths and English Language studies before being allowed to progress.
Two-year full Level 3 Extended National Diplomas at Petroc
All entrants must hold GCSE English Language at grade 4 or above and preferably GCSE Maths at grade 4 or above, amongst the 5 GCSEs at grade 4 required for entry. Entrants not holding a grade 4 in Maths, but who have a grade 2/3, will study GCSE Maths and take the examination at the end of the year. Completing first years will not be able to automatically continue into their second year without achieving GCSE Maths at grade 4.
