Bricklaying

This Level 2 Technical Certificate in Bricklaying is aimed at anyone looking to work in the construction industry – specifically as a craftsperson in bricklaying.

A bricklayer has the skills and knowledge to build or repair walls in accordance with construction plans. They may also build or refurbish arches or other structures, therefore they play an important part of any construction team.

During the course, you will gain an understanding of all the main skills and knowledge that are important when you are working as a bricklayer or progressing to further learning and training in this area. You will study the following mandatory content:
– Principles of construction
– Building cavity walls
– Building solid walls and piers
– Constructing basic arches
– Setting out buildings

The units are designed so that you learn the underlying principles and practical skills involved, whilst gaining an overview of the principles of construction, building technology and terminology used.

You will also undertake structured work experience or work placements within a relevant business.

Assessments

To achieve the City & Guilds Level 2 Technical Certificate in Bricklaying candidates must successfully complete both mandatory assessment components. The include a Bricklaying theory exam, a Bricklaying synoptic assignment, and employer involvement.

Entry Requirements

All entrants must hold four GCSEs at grade 3 or equivalent (or above), preferably including GCSE Maths and English. If you do not have a GCSE grade 4 in Maths and/or English you will continue studying these subjects alongside your chosen course(s). At the end of the year, you are expected to have completed and achieved all the components of your Level 2 Study Programme and improved your Maths and English skills before progressing to your next level course

This qualification is suitable if you are 16 years old, or over. You don’t need any previous experience to start this qualification.

Progression

Following successful completion of this qualification you will be qualified to work in the construction industry as a bricklayer. You could progress into employment as a bricklayer, onto an apprenticeship, or further your studies by taking other qualifications at Level 3.



Achievement of this qualification demonstrates to an employer that you have the necessary technical skills and knowledge they are looking for when recruiting for a bricklayer. This may be working for a house-building company, a property development company, or working as part of a small business repairing and

refurbishing buildings.



This qualification will allow you to progress into employment or onto the Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Bricklaying (450).This will allow you to enhance the skills and knowledge that you have gained at level two, to progress into higher job roles such as an advanced craft bricklayer. This qualification could also lead you to an apprenticeship in construction. There are a number of new and exciting apprenticeships currently being developed in construction, including bricklaying/trowel occupations, so you could progress to be an apprentice working as a bricklayer.

– Personal Development Awards – developing six key areas of personal and employability behaviours to prepare you for the working world.
