Level 1 Caring for Children
This Level 1 programme combines classroom theory and practical learning to provide an introduction to education and early years. It has been carefully crafted to provide you with a range of subject knowledge and maximum exposure to the types of skills you will experience in the work environment or within further study at Petroc. You will learn from curriculum experts who are passionate about their field of expertise.
During the course, you will learn the core knowledge that underpins the industry and you will also develop occupation-specific skills that will allow you to progress onto a higher level of study.
Some of the units covered within this course could include:
Growth and development of young children
Supporting babies to play
Respecting and valuing children
Practical Health and safety when with young children
As well as your core and specialist modules, you will undertake a tutorial programme, gain support with developing your study skills, and the opportunity to improve your GCSE Maths and English grades.

Assessments
Assessment methods could be through a range of written-based assignments, examinations or practical-based assessments.
Entry Requirements
You must hold four GCSEs at grade 2 or equivalent (or above), preferably including Maths and English. If you do not have a GCSE grade 4 in Maths and/or English, youโll continue studying these subjects alongside your chosen course(s). At the end of the year, you are expected to have completed and achieved all the components of your Level 1 Study Programme and improved your Maths and English skills (where applicable) before progressing on to your next course.

Progression
Upon successful completion of this course, you can progress onto a Level 2 course in Education & Early Years or other level 2 courses.

We also have excellent links with local early years settings as well as a highly qualified teaching and assessing team to support and guide you through the programme.
FAQs
Q: Do I have to complete all aspects of the programme?
A: Yes, to qualify you must pass your core assessments and examinations in GCSE Maths and/or English.
Q: Will I attend a work placement?
A: Yes, as part of your study programme you will be required to undertake a minimum number of work experience hours during your studies. Your teaching team will support you in successfully obtaining a work placement.
Study Programme
Every full-time student at Petroc will have their own Study Programme which will include:
– Your academic or vocational qualification.
– Maths and English Language development – if you have not achieved GCSE grade 4 in either of these subjects.
– Work Experience – hours will vary depending on your qualification and course level.
– Tutor Support – to support your personal, academic and professional development.
– Sustainability – helping you to identify how you can improve the sustainability of your future employment sectors.
– Personal Development Awards – developing six key areas of personal and employability behaviours to prepare you for the working world.
As this course requires you to undertake work placements with children and/or vulnerable adults, a DBS check is required.
