FAQs
What is an AAQ and how is it different from A Levels?
An AAQ (Advanced Alternative Qualification) is a Level 3 qualification, equivalent to A Levels, but with a more practical and technical focus. It is designed to prepare you for work in a specific industry – in this case, construction and the built environment.
Can this AAQ be taken alongside other A Levels?
Yes. This qualification is classed as a small AAQ and can therefore be taken alongside two other A Levels
Is this course suitable for university progression?
Yes. The AAQ carries UCAS points, and many universities accept it for related degree programmes in construction, civil engineering, surveying, and architecture.
Do I need any experience in construction before joining?
No prior experience is needed, but a genuine interest in the industry, good problem-solving skills, and a positive work ethic are essential.
Will I need to wear PPE or work on construction sites?
Yes. For practical tasks and any site visits, you’ll be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which the college will advise you on. Site visits and practical activities are a valuable part of your learning experience.
Is there any work experience involved in the course?
Yes. As part of your learning, we encourage industry engagement through work experience opportunities, site visits, employer projects, and guest speakers. This will enhance your understanding and build employability skills.
What kind of maths is involved?
You will need to use applied mathematical techniques, particularly around measurements, areas, volumes, structural forces, and costing. Good GCSE maths skills will be beneficial.
