Carpentry & Joinery
This Level 1 programme combines classroom theory and practical learning to provide an introduction to the carpentry industry. It has been carefully crafted to provide you with a range of subject knowledge and maximum exposure to the types of skills you will experience in the work environment or within further study at Petroc. You will learn from curriculum experts who are passionate about their field of expertise.
During the course, you will learn the core knowledge that underpins the industry and you will also develop occupation-specific skills that will allow you to progress onto a higher level of study.
The course encompasses a qualification in carpentry and joinery.
Some of the units covered within this course could include:
– Introduction to the construction industry building principles
– Introduction to health and safety in the construction industry
– Introduction to carpentry and joinery
– Joints
– Timber technology
– Methods of frame construction
As well as your core and specialist modules, you will undertake a tutorial programme, gain support with developing your study skills, and the opportunity to improve your GCSE Maths and English grades.

Assessments
Assessment methods could be through a range of written-based assignments, examinations or practical-based assessments.
Entry Requirements
You must hold four GCSEs at grade 2 or equivalent (or above), preferably including Maths and English. If you do not have a GCSE grade 4 in Maths and/or English, you’ll continue studying these subjects alongside your chosen course(s). At the end of the year, you are expected to have completed and achieved all the components of your Level 1 Study Programme and improved your Maths and English skills (where applicable) before progressing on to your next course.
Progression
Upon successful completion of this course, you can progress onto one of our Technical Level 2 construction courses or undertake an apprenticeship.
Facilities and resources
Our workshops are fully equipped with hand tools, power tools and up-to-date machinery, and our classrooms are fully equipped with smart boards and other teaching and learning devices.

Every full-time student at Petroc will have their own Study Programme which will include:
– Your academic or vocational qualification.
– Maths and English Language development – if you have not achieved GCSE grade 4 in either of these subjects.
– Work Experience – hours will vary depending on your qualification and course level.
– Tutor Support – to support your personal, academic and professional development.
– Sustainability – helping you to identify how you can improve the sustainability of your future employment sectors.
– Personal Development Awards – developing six key areas of personal and employability behaviours to prepare you for the working world.
