Engineering Manufacturing Technician – Higher Apprenticeship
This apprenticeship is a robust progression route from Level 3 Engineering-related studies. You will be required to study a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Engineering.
Engineering Manufacturing Technicians gather information and data from a range of sources and analyse the information/data. They make decisions, solve problems and produce and/or update technical documentation, reports or specifications covering areas such as quality, reliability, production schedules/targets, costing or other technical documentation that informs others what needs to be done – such as how a product must be designed, manufactured, tested, modified, maintained, stored, transported, commissioned or decommissioned.
This apprenticeship will provide specialist technical support for engineers, so that organisations can develop, produce or test new/existing products, processes, or procedures to meet customer specification.

Finally, your knowledge of engineering will be tested in an individual engineering project. It represents a significant amount of work, in which you must be proactive in managing your own learning and identifying the resources to complete the task. The aims of the project are to ensure that you understand engineering disciplines and show how you integrate engineering topics into a range of project tasks.
This course will track your progress using a mixture of assignments, coursework, project work and formal examinations at the end of each module.
A CAD assessment and extended engineering project are coursework-based.
At the end of the 42 months you will go through an End Point Assessment (EPA). Within this you will have to have an observation with questioning and a professional discussion supported by portfolio of evidence with an EPAO assessor.
You’ll require 64 UCAS points for admission on to this course; this equates to the following:
Merit/Merit at National Diploma level
Merit/Merit/Pass at Extended Diploma level
A Level equivalents in a related subject
You’ll also need GCSE Maths and English at grade C/4 or above (or equivalent qualifications).
Mature learners will be subject to an interview prior to entry; where any related experience will be taken into consideration.
Most successful students qualify to take the FdSc Production and Manufacture; an equally attractive alternative is an apprenticeship in engineering which could lead toward further study while in work.
Facilities and resources
You will be based at the South West Institute of Technology, offering advanced facilities and equipment, for digital science and engineering. It has clean-room fabrication capabilities, electronics design, manufacture and testing laboratories, additive technologies (3D), and production robotics. It is also a large, welcoming social environment, where students work, relax, and share ideas.
